As World Day Against Trafficking in Persons approaches on July 30th, we reflect on this year’s theme, “Reach every victim of trafficking, leave no one behind.”
Human trafficking comes in many shapes and sizes, often manifesting locally as sex trafficking and survival sex such as prostitution, stripping, phone sex, webcams, and other types of commercial sex trade. The vulnerability of those targeted by predators makes homeless youths and runaways particularly susceptible to exploitation. Additionally, marginalized groups including youth of color, LGBTQ youth, and low-income young people, are at increased risk. The statistics are staggering, with estimates revealing that the average age of entry into prostitution is shockingly between 12-14 years old, with 90% of exploited youth having experienced prior abuse, neglect, and sexual trauma.
Through our Sex Trafficking and Exploitation Program (STEP), we aim to actively connect Commercial Sexual Exploitation survivors and those at-risk, across Pierce County, with vital resources and referrals for medical, legal, therapeutic, and social services. We deliver consistent, non-judgmental support and belief to every individual who seeks advocacy services with us. Understanding the importance of autonomy and self-determination, survivors are given the freedom to access these services at their own pace, either by choice or referral, and can decline them at any time.
Rebuilding Hope is not just an organization; we are a community that stands united against trafficking, offering unwavering support, hope, and the promise of a brighter future for survivors. Together, let us use this World Day Against Trafficking in Persons to spread awareness, foster empathy, and work towards a world where sexual exploitation is eradicated, and every survivor finds solace, healing, and empowerment. If you or someone you know is a victim/survivor of sexual exploitation or is at-risk of exploitation, please ask about STEP services anytime, day or night, by contacting our 24/7 Helpline at (253) 474-7273.
